For the past ten years I have been fairly consistently attending the Halloween Pumpkin Carving Fest at Mike Sprung’s place in Toronto. It is a Fall ritual that has taken on a more nuanced meaning as everybody gets closer to the John Henry line: “another year older and deeper in debt – St. Peter don’t you call me ’cause I can’t go – I owe my soul to the company roll”. But what makes the occasion especially fun for me is the chance to show off my Pumpkin carving skills. Really – display an artistic side that ordinarily gets sidelined in the day to day that is Web software development and commentary.
Okay it is also about the chance to chat (…. uhh gossip as Womenspeak is more truthful) and compare combs on what is happening in the worlds of politics and economics is also appreciated. But the chance to make these:
into wonderful door and stairway stoppers is well nigh irresistible. And it seems I am not alone in the propensity to carve pumpkins creatively as there is a pretty consistent turnout:
And once you have a carved pumpkin everyone knows it craves candle light. And for that I have proof too:
And of course, this is the piece de resistance – what carvers and pumpkin patch plunderers are really striving for – the chance to see their creations in lights!
